Updating a basic authentication key requires providing the original password. This seems rather unnecessary especially if I just want to lower the rate limiting of the key. Is there a work around for this?

We have this feature in our issue tracker, and I just raised its priority.
As a fallback it may work if you update Key via API, and will send only “Hash” field with keeping “Password” empty.
